Slade is a British rock band that emerged in the early 1970s, known for their distinctive glam rock sound and energetic performances. The group was formed in Wolverhampton, England, in 1966, originally under the name The "N' Betweens. Their classic lineup consisted of Noddy Holder (vocals and guitar), Dave Hill (guitar and vocals), Jim Lea (bass guitar, keyboards, and vocals), and Don Powell (drums).
Slade's breakthrough came in the early 1970s when they adopted a glam rock style, combining loud, anthemic rock with catchy hooks and flamboyant stage presence. They achieved massive success in the UK, with a series of hit singles and albums. Their most notable tracks include "Cum On Feel the Noize" (1973), which became one of their signature songs, and "Merry Xmas Everybody" (1973), which remains a festive classic to this day.
Their music was a vibrant mix of rock, pop, and glam, characterized by Holder's powerful vocals, Lea's multi-instrumental talents, Hill's flashy guitar work, and Powell's driving drumming. Slade's music often featured sing-along choruses, rebellious lyrics, and a sense of fun, making them favorites in both the glam rock scene and later, with the rise of heavy metal.
The band's influence extended beyond their own era. Tracks like "Gudbuy T'Jane", "Take Me Bak 'Ome", and "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me" were massive hits and helped solidify their place in rock history. Despite their success in the 1970s, the band’s popularity waned in the 1980s, though they remained a beloved act with a dedicated fan base.
THEN and NOW : Jim Lea, Dave Hill, Don Powell, Noddy Holder,
Slade's unique appeal lay in their ability to balance commercial success with raw, unpolished rock energy, paving the way for later bands in the glam and hard rock genres. Although the band's lineup changed over time, with Holder and Lea being the constant members, their music and legacy remain influential in the rock and roll world.
